Part 5: Gavin

Chapter 23

When Gavin was younger, Friday was date night. There was always a party somewhere to crash, bars to hang out in, things to do. Movies, dinners, sex. The whole week seemed to drag by until five o’clock Friday rolled around, and then he was out the door. When he was in his twenties, he’d always assumed Fridays would be play time, like recess in elementary school, a reward for being a responsible adult the rest of the week. Saturdays were good, too, but by then, the weekend was half over, and Sundays he had to start thinking about Monday and work. But Friday held the promise of fun.

Now on Fridays he can’t wait for the end of the workday for a different reason. He has a 3:45 comp class he always tries to wrap up early, then he heads out, but not on a date. Even once he and Brody started dating seriously—moving from tentative friends to what he still thinks of as “going steady”—his date on Fridays is the little lady who will always hold a special place in his heart.

Evie.

Every other Friday, he leaves the college as fast as he can, making a beeline for Marian’s. If he’s lucky, he gets there before she starts hitting the wine too hard, and the hand off goes as smoothly as it can. Evie makes it work, somehow; or, rather, they make it work for her sake. Any harsh words they might have are curbed around her. Any animosity between them is kept out of sight.

Well, mostly.

It’s been three months since Evie met Brody, bringing the seductive tattooed artist into Gavin’s life. Brody living a stone’s throw from Gavin’s office is a plus—Gavin finds himself staying over with Brody during the week and simply walking to work the next morning. The weekends when he doesn’t have Evie, Gavin invites Brody to stay with him, and through long hours spent together, he’s memorized every design and swirl and word gracing his lover’s body. He’s even begun to think maybe he might want to get a tattoo himself—something small, of course, in an out of the way place he can easily cover up, but he already knows he wants Brody to design it. They’re surprisingly good together, both in and out of the bedroom.

When Gavin has Evie for the weekend, Brody visits but doesn’t stay overnight. It’s obvious Evie’s fallen in love with the man, and Gavin thinks he might be doing the same.

Thinks? No, he is. He knows he is. He’s just waiting for the right moment to say the words out loud.

As spring burns off into another hot Virginia summer, Gavin’s schedule changes. He has a few classes over the summer term, a remedial comp class for those who need to bring up their GPA and a thesis workshop for masters’ candidates, which leaves him plenty of time to get to know Brody better. They spend every evening together, and some afternoons he heads down to Carytown between classes to check on the progress Brody’s making on the skate shop.
